Following being approached by various parishioners about speeding concerns along Hornby Road and Wennington Road, Wray with Botton Parish Council have been exploring different options available to us, in conjunction with Lancashire County Council Highways and Transport Department. We put various requests to them; re-painting all lines on the roads around the village; pedestrian crossing, mobile speed camera requests. However, there were no options which LCC were able to provide us with, other than “Slow Down, Save Lives” banners and stickers. An option available to all Parish Councils is to purchase Speed Indicator Devices themselves and have them installed by LCC.
Wray Parish Council identified various sites on the entrance/exit points to the village for LCC to assess for suitability for a SPID and have received the two options as indicated with the yellow line in these locations on Wennington Road and Hornby Road. These are the sites which have been assessed by LCC to meet all the requirements for placement of a SPID.
The SPIDs themselves have restrictions on their size and weight, which have to be met in order for them to be installed by LCC. We have explored various options for these and the Council resolved that their preferred SPID had a speed indicator and a smiley/unhappy face. These have been sourced from a local provider in Kendal. An example can be seen in Caton, where they have recently had 2 solar powered SPIDs installed along Caton Road. Wray Parish Council resolved to purchase 2 solar powered SPIDs as they will require less maintenance for recharging the batteries. The poles have to be purchased from LCC, who will fit them and install the SPIDs to ensure all regulations are met.
Following this planning, research and assessment stage, Wray Council are now entering a period of consultation with residents who will look on to the SPIDs to garner their opinions. Wray Parish Council will then make a decision on how to proceed with this project, at the Ordinary Meeting, Monday 9th June 2025.
